Back from the Dead

I know I haven’t posted in quite awhile, but I’m regaining the interest I once had for blogging. Believe it or not, I’ve been going through a lot since I posted last. Like a lot of mental obstacles. Now on to more pertinent matters. This weekend marked the launch of two very important things if you are a media gobbler: The release of Pokemon X and Y for Nintendo 3DS, and the season premiere of The Walking Dead.

Pokemon X and Y are a bit of nostalgia from my younger days. This game has brought back everything that I loved about Pokemon, and added a lot of new relevant things. I’m not the leading expert on Pokemon, considering the last one I really played was Pokemon Blue on the GameBoy Color back in 1998, but I feel right at home with this new game, especially since I get to pick some of the original starters. Now I understand most of you probably aren’t Pokemon people, but I’ve got one more thing to say about it. I went to the midnight release, and there were more college students who had bought Pokemon over children whose parents had bought them Pokemon.

Tonight was the premiere of The Walking Dead, the leading show on AMC network about the zombie apocalypse. I have been waiting for this premiere since the end of last season. You may not be a big fan of the whole “zombie apocalypse” thing but I highly recommend watching it. It is not only a good story, but also beautiful film work. I notice that kind of stuff because I am a film student. That’s another argument for another day.

In other words, while I did disappear for awhile, I am now back from the dead. I’m not going to promise that I’m going to post regularly, but I’m going to post more often, just whenever the muse hits me and I feel like I want to write. I need to get my writing up to par of that of the best screenwriters if I want to make a name for myself. Back on subject, I’m back, and better than ever.

Daily Prompt: Nightmares: Vivid beyond Belief

Daily Prompt: Nightmares.

When I have nightmares, they are very vivid, and I always wake up terrified. I have had many nightmares in my life, but it was only the most vivid messed up ones that I remember, and still remember to this day.

I have had a nightmare where there were tornadoes outside of my window, and I was trying to escape, but the tornadoes picked themselves off of the ground and stuck the ends inside of my childhood bedroom. Even to this day I am terrified of severe weather.

Another nightmare that I’ve had is that my current boyfriend died in a car accident, but he was still able to talk to me through Facebook’s messaging feature. That was one of the weirdest, but scariest dreams I’ve ever had, and I am still terrified that it will come true.

Sometimes my nightmares I can’t remember, but more often than not, I do remember them. And they keep me awake for hours. I wish I could get rid of them, but I can’t.

Daily Prompt: Far From Normal, Very Far Far Away

Daily Prompt: Far From Normal.

I am probably the poster child of the least normal person on the planet, but I could be wrong. I have the mentality of a male, but without the levels of testosterone that would leave me with excess body hair.

I grew up in the country, always had trouble making friends, mainly because me and my brothers were so close. We did everything together. In the summer we would go outside and play town in the sand box, little mounds of sand that served as houses. In the winter we would go downstairs and play big town, with me and my brothers playing the town inhabitants, with fake money and every thing. We would even play school, which was pretty interesting, mainly because we all hated it so much.

I was always the leader, the teacher, the insurance company owner, and when things didn’t go my way, we would stop playing.

I am not your average girl. I know the value of money, and I don’t go and blow it whenever I want to. Although I would like to, I know my limits.

My life has been strange, but I have been able to handle everything that has been thrown at me. My advice, live life to the fullest, and don’t give up when something goes wrong, just get back up and keep going.

Daily Prompt: Mentor Me, or Lack Thereof

Daily Prompt: Mentor Me.

I never really had a mentor. It was always me against the world, and I’ve become a stronger person for it.

My parents got divorced when I was in 6th grade, which is a lot for a 6th grader to handle, but things didn’t start changing until the June after my parents announced to us what was going on.

In June my Mom moved into a new house in town, a house mind you, that we didn’t get to see before we moved in. We had to fix it up, because the owner before us didn’t take very good care of it, so much of the house smelled awful, and like animal piss and mold. The whole remodeling process was an adventure.

Once school started up again, and my mom went back to work, she left most of the parenting to me. As if the divorce wasn’t hard enough on me, now I had to make sure that my brothers had everything that they needed, and that they got fed properly. It was incredibly unfair to me, and to this day my mother doesn’t know what she put me through.

I never had a mentor, if anything, I was my own mentor. I wouldn’t change what happened for anything. If I did, I wouldn’t be the person I ended up being. I would be a spoiled brat, and not the level headed adult I’ve grown up to be.

I’ve had social problems due to my higher maturity level, having a harder time making friends or keeping friends. People saw me as the strange girl who spends time by herself. So I gave up on people.

I wouldn’t change my life. I just look towards the future, and I don’t like to look back.

Daily Prompt: The Clock

Daily Prompt: The Clock.

As a little girl, my parents would sometimes leave me home alone, mainly watching over my brothers while they went to town to run a few errands. My mom would always leave us with one task.

“When I’m gone please clean up the house.”

While this may seem a daunting task, it almost always didn’t get done right away. Me and my brothers would goof off in the house and make a bigger mess of the place.

When I heard the car door slam, I always immediately looked at the clock and tried to clean up a little, just so that I could say that I did what she asked us to do.

Time is a precious thing, a thing that many of us take for granted. Some of us waste time, while some of us take what time we have and use it to the fullest. As we grow older, it seems as if though we have less and less time. As children, we feel as if we have all the time in the world.

Time flies when you are having fun, so why not enjoy what time we have?

Daily Prompt: Proud

Daily Prompt: Proud.

Pride. It’s simple, but all the same, not so simple. If you are proud of something, it’s because you created it, and you believe that it’s great.

Many parents think this way of their children, but their children gain pride in their accomplishments as well.

My parents are proud of me because they have raised me well enough that they know I can stand on my own, and that I will be able to hold my own and handle whatever comes at me.

So be proud of what you do. You never know what you can do if you just believe in yourself.

My View of the World 2/15/2013

I’m new to the blogging community, but I am glad that I joined. There are a lot of blogs out there about many different things that you can read, and get advice and receive information.

When I first started posting, I wasn’t sure what I should blog about. Should I blog about what I love (movies, dogs, etc.), or should I bring about change by blogging about social issues that need to be known about and changed. Even my blog title lacked in originality. So once I started writing, I knew what I should do.

I renamed my blog, The Wondering College Student, a clever play on words because I don’t go anywhere. Then I began blogging about anything and everything. Well not quite yet, but I’ve got a solid start.

The more I keep writing, the better it will be, and the more experience I will gain. It’s a win win situation.

I’m going to post a My View of the World once a week, on Fridays. That way you all have something to look forward to. To help me get into the routine of regularly posting something, I’m going to do the Daily Post every day. If I have an experience that I feel needs to be shown, then I will also post that as well. So there will possibly more than one post a day.

So, that’s it for today. Have a nice weekend, and stay classy my friends.

Hitting the Snooze

11:00 A.M. sharp. Alarm goes off. You have class in an hour, so you press the snooze button.  Ten minutes later, your alarm goes off, again you hit the snooze button. Another ten minutes later, your alarm goes off again. What do you do? You would think that by now you would finally drag yourself out of bed. But for someone’s roommate, this is not the case.

I got woken up at 5:30 in the morning because my roommate’s alarm went off. I wouldn’t have minded if it went off once, or even twice before she decided to get up, but she hit the snooze button ten to fifteen times before I finally asked her to turn the alarm off. I don’t know about you, but this seems a little bit drastic.

It was fine for about an hour after she turned the alarm off, but I had to wake up at 8 A.M. to go to a class at 9 A.M. I am not a morning person, but getting woken up really early because your roommate is too lazy to turn an alarm off that is two inches from her face is a bit excessive in my opinion.

This incident got me thinking though. I am pretty sure there are people like her that have a hard time waking up in the morning the first time that your alarm goes off. So for your enjoyment, here are 7 things that will help you get out of bed in the morning.

1. Set the timer, if possible, so that a bright light will shine in your face. That way it will be easier to wake up on time. Plus it’s really hard to sleep with a bright light shining in your face.

2. Set a timer on a heater for an hour before you wake up. If your room is nice and cozy, you will be more willing to leave the coziness of your bed and sheets into a warm room when you wake up.

3. If you are a coffee drinker, get a coffee pot with a timer so that when you wake up you can have a nice hot pot of coffee waiting for you to drink it all up. Another plus is that the smell of the delicious coffee will probably help you get your butt out of bed.

4. This may seem like a no brainer, but put your alarm clock on the other side of the room. Then you are forced to get up and turn the alarm off.

5. You can also set a second alarm and set it in another room so that when the first alarm goes off you know you have to go find the second one before it too goes off.

6. If you still find yourself hitting the snooze button time after time, take your alarm, lock it up in a combination box and attach the internal clock speaker to an external stereo speaker. This is a bit extreme, but if it works, then it works.

7. Now this one is just a last ditch effort to get you to stop hitting that pesky snooze button, so only use it if nothing else works. Super glue your snooze button so that it is not functional, but in a way that doesn’t hurt your alarm clock.

So to avoid situations like the one that I am in, and annoying and waking up your roommate, use those helpful tips to help you wake up the first time, and not the 20th time your alarm goes off.

Daily Prompt: Cupid’s Arrow- My First Love

Daily Prompt: Cupid’s Arrow.

I was hit by Cupid’s arrow about a year and a half ago. Unexpectedly I was sitting at a computer printing off college applications for my records, and dabbling a little bit on Facebook games, when suddenly a shy, but cute boy began messaging me.

I had “went out” with this boy before in one of those Jr. High relationships that last 2 seconds, except mine lasted 2 days. I never thought that I would consider dating this guy in the real world.

We began talking about random things, and then he asked me a question: “Do you like me?” He is a shy guy, and this was his way of asking me out. I didn’t quite get it at first, so I replied with a “Yes, I do like you.” From then on we began dating, me not so sure that he was right for me, but I stuck it out.

I didn’t really fall in love with him until Christmas, which is when we had our first kiss. It was a bittersweet moment, awkward but nice all the same. It was then that I knew he wasn’t going to break up with me.

I am incredibly insecure, constantly worrying about my weight, and every time I tell him that maybe I’m getting a little chubby, he tells me that I’m perfect. It makes me feel a lot better.

I’m glad I gave him a second chance, because if I hadn’t I wouldn’t be dating the best man ever for a woman like me.

My View of the World 2/13/2013

In one of my classes we have been talking about social issues that arise in the media that we consume every day. In a way we all have been desensitized by the constant bombardment of all this media.

Have any of you ever thought about gender codes? That’s the issue we are discussing right  now. But have you really thought about it? The way women are displayed on advertisements show them in demeaning positions, as well as enforcing the stereotype that we all see women as being. Scantily clad, in positions that place women as the victim, and not focused on their surroundings. Does that sound familiar to you? It should. Open up a magazine and look at some of the ads featuring women. What do you see? Advertisements aren’t the only place you see this happening. Watch a music video featuring a male singer. Most of the time the women are featured in demeaning ways. The problem is more prevalent in Hip-Hop or Rap music videos. It’s media like this that enforces the self esteem issues, and the eating disorders that we have problems with today.

Some of you might be saying: “America doesn’t have a problem with eating disorders, we have a problem with obesity.” Yes, while that is true, this is not the issue I am discussing.

It also isn’t just women. Men are being put through the same stresses as the women are. Men are almost always shown in advertisements alert and focused, and sometimes with a woman hanging off of him. A sense of hyper-masculinity is being portrayed. But similarly with the issue with women, hyper-masculinity isn’t just in advertising. Look at movies such as Rambo, or Terminator. How are the men portrayed? Muscular, strong, aggressive, aware of their surroundings, just to name a few.

Abercrombie and Fitch ads are famous for portraying several men in all of their ads, but in order to keep their base selling demographics, they will show several half-naked men and a woman. They are trying to convince their customers that they are not homo erotic. Many people are afraid of homo erotic images.

Though times are a changing. The LGBT community is becoming more and more accepted by more people. Just because these issues are pelted at us all the time every day, doesn’t mean that they don’t need to be hidden. They need to be brought to light and discussed and addressed.
